Extraction System Supply & Spares

Airflow Gauges

While there is no specific legal requirement to install airflow indicators or similar devices on your extraction system, as an employer, you are legally obligated to ensure your Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system operates properly. A common cause of LEV system failure is a drop in airflow, which can result from material build-up, ducting damage, or other issues. When airflow becomes inadequate, effective control is lost, compromising the safety and efficiency of your system.

A simple and effective way to monitor this is by using airflow indicators at the hood. These devices provide immediate reassurance that the airflow rate is maintained, protecting your employees and preventing unnecessary costs. While other methods, such as using an anemometer, dust lamp, or smoke tracer (during operation), can also measure airflow, an airflow indicator is the only device that will immediately alert the operator or supervisor to any problems.

The Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) LEV guidance (HSG 258) recommends the installation of airflow indicators as a standard practice.
